Distances have names
The distance between two notes is an interval, and every distance has a name. The half step and whole step that build scales are the smallest two: the 2nds. Name the distances and melodies stop being random. They become paths made of familiar jumps.
Every distance in the octave
Every distance from zero semitones to the full octave, each measured up from the same low C, with a song to hang it on. Sing the hook, and you've sung the interval. The rows wearing the major scale tag land on the ladder from the last lesson; the plain rows fall between its rungs. Tap a row to hear the low C, then the top note.
One after another, or both at once
Played in a row an interval is a melody move; played together it's the seed of a chord. Same distance, two jobs. Here's a perfect 5th doing both.
