18.1 · The Staff
Five lines, four spaces
Written pitch lives on a staff: five lines, four spaces, and one simple rule. The higher a note sits on the page, the higher it sounds. The curly symbol at the front is the treble clef, and its job is to wrap around the G line so you always know where you are.
Up the page, up in pitch
Every line and every space holds one note. Climb them in order and you get a scale in steps: line, space, line, space.
Try the staff yourself
This staff is live. Tap anywhere: a notehead appears, plays, and tells you its name.
